Living in Cinque Terre we see group tours come and go throughout the season. We see big groups trying to get in and out of the trains, trying to huddle in a calm corner, sometimes the guides are screaming to reach everyone. It is not pretty. Not only do you have to fight 30 other people but you are told that you are on your own when you get to the villages. "Meet me in 20 minutes" is what we often hear. The result is confusion or a sense of rush. You are being pushed through. This cant be what you had in mind when you signed up for an unforgettable trip.
Some tour operators do take people up onto the trails, but even there is it hard to manage the amount of people. With only one guide, the people at the end of the line are not hearing what the guide is describing. Passing other hikers can be a nightmare if not dangerous on a narrow trail when you have 30 people trying to pass.
Trekguyd is definitely an alternative. One guide for just you and the one you are traveling with. Most of our treks consist of 2 people. You are one on one with your guide, who you get to know well and by the end of the day you made a new friend. You will learn a lot about the area, the people and the history of this amazing place.
